CV-S baseball absorbs first loss

Staff Report

The Cherry Valley-Springfield baseball team lost its first game of the season to Richfield on Saturday, but won a pair of league contests last week to remain perfect in Tri-Valley play.

The Patriots lost a 3-1 decision at Richfield Saturday, despite allowing just two hits. Errors and the lack of clutch hitting did CV-S in, said CV-S baseball coach Ed Dubben.

``We made two errors which led to three unearned runs, and we left 12 runners on, including nine in scoring position,’’ Dubben said. We beat ourselves, but give Richfield credit, they played a flawless defensive game.’’

CV-S entered the game on a seven game winning streak to start the season, including a come-from-behind 5-3 win over Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton last Wednesday and a 28-5 romp over Franklin on Friday.

Against G-MU, CV-S starter Adam Halay pitched a complete game, allowing two hits and striking out 10 with just one walk. Mathias Vanderwerker hit a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 4-3 lead, and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Spencer Staley.

``My pitching has been tremendous this season,’’ Dubben said. ``My top three have been pretty much lights out.’’

Against Franklin, Dave Adams picked up his first varsity win, striking out nine, and Cody Duncan mopped up in his first varsity pitching action, striking out three. Adams was also 3-for-7 at the plate, and Chris Henderson, Shawn Sheldon, Spencer Staley, Ben Halay, Jeremy Hoag and Ben Halay all had two hits each.

The Patriots, 7-1 overall and 6-0 in league play, hosted Milford Wednesday and host Schenevus Friday before traveling to Edmeston Monday for a showdown of league unbeatens. The game will most likely be a preview of the Tri-Valley Championship Game set for May 21 at Oneonta State.

CV-S is the defending T-V Champion, and should clinch their fourth straight Tri-Valley East title with ease. They lead second place Worcester by four games with six remaining.
