CV-S baseball now 5-0

The Cherry Valley-Springfield baseball team continued its winning ways last week as they prepare for a showdown with fellow unbeaten Tri-Valley rival Edmeston on May 14.

The Patriots improved to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in T-V play with a 6-1 victory at Laurens on Monday.

CV-S starting pitcher Steve Herringshaw carried a no-hitter to the seventh inning, but Laurens’ Ryan Carr led off with a double for the Leopards only hit.

Herringshaw struck out 15 and walked three in the complete game performance. Ben Halay continued a torrid week at the plate with two hits, including a home run, and Nathanial Herringshaw and Mike Fassett also doubled.

``Steve is just dominant right now,’’ said CV-S head coach Ed Dubben. ``We’ve been getting solid pitching all season.’’

The Patriots toughest game of the young season was last Thursday, when they needed five runs in the top of the seventh inning to escape with a 6-3 win at Schenevus. The Dragons ousted CV-S from sectionals last season, and the teams always seem to play close games.

``We were swinging for the fences most of the game, but we finally decided to hit in that last inning,’’ Dubben said.

Anthony Brant led off the winning rally with a double, and Spencer Staley singled him home. After Staley stole second, Dave Adams hit a one-out single to tie the score. Shawn Sheldon walked, and after a strikeout, Ben Halay hit a two out, two-run triple to break the tie. Steve Herringshaw followed with an RBI single, and struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to record a save. Sheldon got the win in relief.

CV-S followed that victory with a thumping of Worcester at home on Friday, 11-1. Ben Halay pitched a complete game, allowing four hits and striking out 10. He also went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs. Steve Herringshaw was also 3-for-4 with 3RBIs and a double. Jeremy Hoag and Mathias Vanderwerker added two hits apiece, including a double for Hoag.

CV-S hosted G-MU last night (Wednesday) and are at Milford Friday.

The Patriots defeated Edmeston in last year’s Tri-Valley Championship Game, and appear likely to meet again this season. This year’s T-V title game is set for Monday, May 21 at 5 p.m. at Oneonta State.
