Coop baseball off to perfect start

The Cooperstown baseball team picked up two key league victories on its way to a 6-0 start to the season last week.

On Saturday, senior Luke Banner threw a complete game, striking out eight in a 3-2 victory over Sauquoit.

The Redskins won another one-run game on Monday, 6-5, over Sherburne-Earlville. Two losses to S-E last year cost Cooperstown a chance at a Center State Conference title.

``We felt like maybe we owed them one, and they are also one of the teams to beat in the league this year,’’ said Cooperstown baseball coach Frank Miosek. ``It was a very good game.’’

Cooperstown jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Marauders tied it with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Redskins bounced back in the bottom of the fifth inning with three runs of their own, as Banner and Frank Petroskey both doubled, and Philip Pohl and Kyle Liner all singled to lead the attack.

Senior Zack Sittler pitched the first six innings, allowing just two earned runs, and Liner, a freshman, relieved in the top of the seventh. A pair of singles and walk led to two runs, and the Marauders had runners on first and second with one out. But Liner struck out the next two batters to preserve the victory.

``Kyle has played five positions for us already, so he has been a big addition this season,’’ Miosek said. ``Monday’s game was our fourth in four days so we were looking for an extra pitcher and Kyle came through.’’

In addition to his pitching gem, Banner, a senior, has started the season on fire at the plate, with 14 hits in his first 24 at bats. He was 3-for-4 Monday with a double. Pohl, a catcher, has 10 hits in 19 at bats and a team-leading 14 runs batted in. Miosek said Tyler Combs is another versatile player who has been doing a good job at a number of different positions.

Pohl pitched the second game of a doubleheader against Camden on Saturday afternoon at Doubleday Field, and struck out 14 batters in a 16-2 victory. In that game, the Redskins exploded for 13 runs in the sixth inning to break the game open.

The Redskins were scheduled to host Canastota on Wednesday in another key league contest, and are at Morrisville Thursday and at Mt. Markham Friday.
