Track aims for sixth straight league title

There’s a good chance the Cooperstown boys track team will send retiring head coach Don Howard out in style this season.
The Redskins have been the beasts of the Center State Conference for the past five seasons, dominating the league while winning five straight titles. Last year, they added the school’s first ever Section Three Class C-1 title as well.
There’s no reason to think it won’t be more of the same this year.
The main strength of the team will be its distance runners, as Howard said he is strong from the 400 right through to the 3,200.
In a tri-meet at Ilion on Monday, senior Will Tirrell won both the 1,600 (4:59) and 3,200 (11:42) to lead CCS to victories over both Ilion and Richfield Springs.
``I’ve been pleased with our times for so early in the season,’’ said Howard, who will retire at the end of the season, his 37th as head coach. ``We have a chance to be a very good team again, but it’s hard to make predictions because of the injury and health factors.’’
Stephen Scrafford, who missed Monday’s meet, may be the top distance runner in the league and probably has the best shot of anyone on the team to make the state meet at the end of the season, Howard said.
Other top distance runners include Jimmy Jennings, Brian Reis, Kris Reynolds and Richard Clancy. [an error occurred while processing this directive]
