State Senator James Seward told the Cooperstown Rotary Club Tuesday that the legislature has had a productive year already.
Now in his 21st session in the senate, Seward said he was ``not re-elected to go to the castle to protect the status quo.’’
The senator reviewed a list of changes and accomplishments made this years by the legislature in Albany:
a budget reform package has been approved, he said, which will do away with the chronic late budget problem.
a new ethics package has been adopted in an effort to restore public trust in government officials and provide much more oversight.
worker’s compensation premiums will be cut 10 to 15 percent that will save employers $1 billion annually.
civil confinement legislation was passed which will allow convicted sex offenders to be civilly confined if they are deemed to be a continuing threat once they have completed their criminal sentence. ``I think it is a big step forward,’’ Seward said.
a $121 billion state budget that has much to offer has been adopted. [an error occurred while processing this directive]
