Young CCS girls track set to begin season

The Cooperstown girls track team counts 17 freshmen among its 45 team members, so head coach Connie Herzig is reserving judgment on what her team is capable of accomplishing this season.

``We haven’t been on the track yet,’’ she said. ``We’ve been running in the hallways and the streets of the village, so it’s hard to get a read on the young girls.’’

Herzig will get a first chance to get that read on Saturday when her team competes at New Hartford in a season-opening non-league meet.

``I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do,’’ she said.

Herzig knows she has talent among her returning athletes, including senior co-captain Becky Fisher.

Fisher, a state finalist for the girls swim team in the fall, competes in both hurdle races and is one of the best in the Center State Conference. Sarah Polus, Rachael Kuch and freshman Emily Snell are also hurdler competitors.

Herzig said she has strong 1500 and 3000 meter runners, including senior co-captain Chloe Strange and Laura Resnick, a junior that Herzig said could be strong in whatever events she enters her in. Resnick will compete in the long and triple jump as well as two running events.

Rebecca Adikes, Mary Catherine Harmon, Kyle Mackie and Kaityln Breiten add depth to what Herzig described as an experienced and talented group.

Cooperstown should also be strong in the throwing events, led by junior Jessie Walrath in both the shot put and discus. Freshman Carly Busse was the modified champion last year as an eighth grader and could also provide some speed in the 100 meter dash.

Mackie, a junior, will also compete in the throwing events this year.

Junior Anna Kieler, the girls soccer team’s leading scorer the last two years, is a newcomer to the team this spring.

``She could be a good jumper and sprinter for us,’’ Herzig said. ``She’s athletic and competitive and could be a very big addition to the team.’’

Two other soccer stars, junior Claire Petroskey and senior Lindsay Soraci, have rejoined the team this year after competing only in their freshman years.

Soraci is a sprinter, while Petroskey will sprint and run the 400 and compete in the long jump.

Kim Kennedy and Krystal Tandle will both triple jump and Tandle will also pole vault along with Ariel Powers, Pouls and Anna Weber.

``Sauquoit is still the team to beat in our league, and Sherburne seems to be coming on strong as well,’’ Herzig said. ``I’m excited to see what our freshman can do, and it’s always a goal to win a medal at our own invitational (May 5). It’s kind of early to think long term, but we could end up with a real solid team.’’

After traveling to New Hartfoed Saturday, Cooperstown will go to Ilion Monday and Fonda Wednesday and are then off for 10 days for spring break.
