CCS’s Fox, Wehner earn hoop honors

Cooperstown junior center Samantha Fox was recently named the Most Valuable Player of the Center State Conference Division II, according to CCS girls basketball coach Frank Miosek.

In addition, junior forward Jen Wehner was named to the CSC Div II first team.

Fox became the first girls player at Cooperstown to accumulate 1,000 career points during her junior season, accomplishing the feat in the Lady Redskins final game of the season. Needing 11 points, she scored 17 in a season-ending loss to Little Falls and has 1,006 career points.

Miosek said for the first time this year, coaches were not allowed to vote for their own players.

``I think coaches recognized the talent and hard work Samantha put into the game,’’ he said. ``She improved a great deal this year and she’ll continue to get better because she works at it.’’

Fox scored 401 points in 22 games and tallied 336 rebounds for the Lady Redskins, who finished the season with a 13-9 record. Fox also had a school record 126 blocked shots this season.

Dawn Berry, a 1987 CCS graduate, had 1,087 career points during her career, and Dana Leonard, who graduated just last year, had a Coop girls record 1,089 points.

Wehner averaged better than 14 points and 12 rebounds a game this season.

``Jen had a great year, and on any other team she’d be the go-to girl,’’ Miosek said. ``I don’t think she’s close to reaching her full potential. Next year, I want her to be more selfish and look for her shot more because she has a great jump shot. She’s a very versatile player.’’

Cooperstown will return its entire starting line-up, which consisted of all juniors this year, next season.
