CSC boys team win tournament
he Clark Sports Center sixth grade basketball team, coached by Sharky Nagelschmidt, traveled to Johnstown, New York on Saturday, March 3 for the Jack Dunlap Memorial Tournament, and came home with a championship title.
The tournament included teams from Johnstown, Fort Plain, Mayfield, Broadalbin-Perth, Canajoharie, Fonda and Cooperstown.
The Clark Sports Center (CSC) boys caught a break from the beginning, obtaining a bye in the first round of the tournament.
In their first game against Fort Plain, CSC dominated the first half with an 11-point lead. Fort Plain came back outscoring CSC 16-6 with a score of 29-28 in the third quarter. But CSC pulled through in the fourth quarter to outscore Fort Plain 16-10 with a final score of 48-45. Michael Rowley of CSC led in points with 19 in the game. Leo Perez of CSC and Marcus Failing from Fort Plain both had 12 points in this game.
CSC ran into some trouble in their second game of the day against Fonda. The boys from Fonda came well prepared and ran a great offense. It was evident that CSC had trouble scoring when they broke at the half; the score was 24-11. Still trailing at the end of the third quarter with a score of 34-20, CSC knew they had to come back to stay in the tournament.
Cooperstown rallied in the fourth quarter to come back and outscore Fonda 22-6. What spurred the CSC comeback was patient and careful shooting, a greater defense and very good press the last two minutes of the game, said coach Nagelschmidt. With 90 seconds left the score was tied at 39-39. Fonda took the lead 40-39, but with a steal and a lay-up, Ethan Bliss of CSC took the lead 41-40, ending an amazing comeback from the team.
Michael Rowley had six points in the fourth quarter for a total of eight points in the second half. Derek Liner finished with four points in the fourth quarter; all of his nine points from the game were scored in the second half. Leo Perez scored four points in the fourth quarter and six of his 13 points in the second half, and Atticus Dennis had a big two points in the fourth quarter.
The final game of the day ended with the CSC boys playing Fonda again. Fonda beat Canajoharie in the loser’s bracket to play CSC after five games that day. CSC came out strong ending the first half with a score 36-12 on the way to a 51-41 victory.
The key in this game was a very balanced scoring attack, Nagelschmidt said. Leo Perez led CSC with 15 points in the game. Derek Liner had 12 points, Michael Rowley scored 11 points, Ethan Bliss scored eight points, Kevin Segit ended the game with two points, and Mikey Boyle scored one point. A strong effort on defense from Sawyer Haney was also a factor in this game.
Michael Rowley (CSC) led the team with 40 points, followed closely by Leo Perez (CSC) with 30 points.
