CCS volleyball wins five-setter
Staff Report
The Cooperstown volleyball team took a thrilling five set victory over Morrisville in a first round sectional game Saturday afternoon, but a scheduled second round game with top seed Dolgeville was postponed indefinitely.
After being snowed out Monday and Tuesday and with Wednesday’s blizzard, CCS head coach Rich Jantzi said the game has been postponed until further notice.
``They’re not even going to reschedule it until the weather gets better,’’ he said.
Saturday’s contest was close throughout, with CC winning the first set, 29-27, then losing the second 24-26, and the third 25-27.
But led by seniors Morgann Clark, Andrianna Lyons and Chelsea Sams, who were all playing their final game in Bursey Gymnasium, Cooperstown stormed back to take the final two sets, 25-14 and 25-12.
``Our conditioning was definitely a factor,’’ said CCS volleyball coach Rich Jantzi. ``They were gassed, but I think we could have played a couple sets more if we needed to.’’
The Lady Redskins missed 25 serves in the game, but Jantzi said his team’s defense was the key to the win.
``Our girls maintained their focus,’’ he said. ``It was a great match.’’
Sophomore Kim Armstrong had 15 digs, 14 assists and six kills for CCS, while Sams added 17 assists and four aces. Lyons had 13 aces, including several in the final two sets to put Cooperstown ahead to stay, and 11 kills. Katie Horrigan had nine kills, while Clark had a solid all-around game with six kills, five blocks and two assists.
