Underdog Milford has tradition on its side

If tradition and experience mean anything, the Milford girls basketball team should have the edge when they meet Morris Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. at Oneonta State in the girls Tri-Valley Championship Game.

Milford has been a T-V power for close to two decades, winning nine T-V titles in 12 appearances, including two three-peats.

``Anything can happen in these games,’’ said Milford head coach Jim Weir, who has been the coach for all the T-V title wins. ``Morris is a very good team, and we’ll have our work cut out for us.’’

The West champion Lady Mustangs finished the season 15-4, including a perfect 12-0 league mark. Morris defeated Milford in their only regular season meeting, 39-29.

``It was a two-point game after three quarters, so we were right in it,’’ Weir said.

Morris head coach Kerry Mason said Weir helped him get into the coaching profession, and he and his team want the success Milford has had.

``They’ve had a tremendous program for a number of years, and I’d love to build the same type of thing here,’’ Mason said. ``I have all the respect in the world for Jim and what he has accomplished.’’

Milford, 14-5, does not have a player averaging in double figures in scoring, but freshman forward Chandler Prouty averages 9.5 points and 10.6 rebounds a contest. Junior guard Brenna Campbell also averages 9.5 points-a-game, and senior guard Corrine Ketzlick scores just under 9 a game. Milford’s other starters are Sam Prendergast and Emily Brigham.
