Losing streak costs Coop girls

The Cooperstown girls basketball team, which lost its final four games of the regular season, will be on the road for a Section Three Class C-1 opening round tournament game next week.

The Lady Redskins, 12-8, will travel to Thousand Islands on Tuesday, Feb. 20. Cooperstown is the fifth seed while Thousand Islands is the fourth seed. The winner of that game will likely play at number one seed and undefeated Little Falls (20-0) the following Friday.

CCS likely would have earned a home game with one win in their final four games, but lost a series of close games, including Monday night’s 42-41 home loss to Waterville. The Lady Redskins held a six-point third quarter lead, but did not score over the final five minutes and 50 seconds of the game, and missed a pair of free throws with .2 seconds left that could have tied or won the game.

``We’re just not executing our offense,’’ said CCS girls basketball coach Frank Miosek. Turnovers, poor shot selection, and having our big girls in foul trouble have all hurt us.’’

Junior center Samantha Fox managed 13 points and nine blocks on Monday, but spent much of the time on the bench with foul trouble. She fouled out midway through the fourth quarter. Jen Wehner led Cooperstown in points with 14.

``We just had an unbelievable amount of turnovers,’’ Miosek said of the Waterville game.

The loss was also painful because it cost CCS a chance at the Center State Conference Division II title. They needed to win one of their final two games to clinch at least a tie, but lost at Mt. Markham Saturday, 58-50.

The Lady Redskins held a nine-point halftime lead, but were outscored 38-21 in the second half. CCS hit just 2-15 foul shots in the game. Fox and Wehner both scored 16 points each. [an error occurred while processing this directive]
