ASPEN, CO _ Cooperstown graduate Chantelle Heroux competed in the X-Games’ Skiercross Invitation Saturday, finishing 15th out of 18 competitors after crashing through the finish line on her initial run.
Heroux, a 2002 graduate of Cooperstown and a 2006 graduate of Plymouth State, qualified for X-Games 11 on Friday by placing third in a qualifying event.
``Really, the main goal was to get there, and she was thrilled to compete,’’ said Maureen Heroux, Chantelle’s mother. ``As far as I know, she’s the only local person to ever compete in the X-Games.’’
Chantelle’s older sisters, Jen and Amanda, and parents Maureen and Roger all made the trip to Colorado to watch her compete.
``It was so much fun,’’ Maureen said. ``Not only to watch Chantelle, but to have a chance to rub elbows with all the greats in the sport of skiing, it was a thrill for all of us.’’
The Herouxs are a family of skiers, but Chantelle has pursued the sport the longest. She was a four-year member of the women’s ski team at Plymouth State, in New Hampshire, and wants to continue to compete in big ski events.
``She’s got some sponsors, and she just loves it,’’ Maureen Heroux said.
The Skiercross is a new event to the Winter X-Games 11, which were held Jan. 25 through 28 and shown live on ESPN and ESPN2 last weekend from the Sugar Bowl Resort near Lake Tahoe. [an error occurred while processing this directive]
