With the game on the line, the Cooperstown girls basketball team turned to its ``Foxy Lady,’’ and she delivered.
Junior center Samantha Fox scored six of the Lady Redskins’ seven overtime points, and blocked a potential game-tying shot with three seconds remaining as Cooperstown took a hard-fought, 51-48 victory over Mt. Markham Monday night at Bursey gymnasium.
With the win, CCS improves to 8-3 overall and a division leading 4-1 in Center State Conference play. They host Sauquoit Thursday, and then travel to undefeated Little Falls Saturday night.
On Monday against the Mustangs, Cooperstown opened up several leads only to see Mt. Markham rally time and again. The Lady Redskins trailed 10-6 late in the first quarter, but went on a 14-2 run, including six points from junior forward Jen Wehner (15 points) to open up a 20-12 lead.
But Markham made a 7-0 run of its own to close the gap to 20-19, and CCS took a 22-21 lead into halftime.
Wehner and Fox (16 points) led a third quarter run that put Cooperstown up 36-27 late in the third quarter, but CCS head coach Frank Miosek was called for a technical foul with just under a minute remaining in the quarter.
Mt. Markham guard Regina Locirini (16 points, 7 assists) hit two free throws and Brandy Werczynski (19 points) added two baskets in the final minute to make the score 36-33 after three quarters.
``We kept finding ways to let them back in the game, including my technical foul,’’ said CCS head coach Frank Miosek. ``But we showed some character to keep fighting and find a way to win.’’ [an error occurred while processing this directive]
