Weir plays on despite injury
Staff Report
Even with one arm, Shannon Weir is better than most players.
After injuring her left elbow during the tail end of a game against Cortland Nov. 30, Weir took off from practice on Wednesday, and only practiced very little on Thursday, according to Oneonta State women’s basketball coach Dan McGraw.
But playing with a brace on her arm, Weir helped lead O-State to two big SUNYAC victories over the weekend.
``Shannon has been playing through it because of her toughness as a player,’’ McGraw said. ``She knew how important the weekend games were to our team because they were both conference games, and she showed a lot of courage, although in pain, to play through it.’’
On Saturday against Fredonia, Weir scored a team-high 16 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Red Dragons to a 51-44 home victory.
On Friday night, Weir had just three points on 1-7 shooting in a 59-52 victory over Buffalo State, also at home.
With the two wins, and another over Morrisville on Tuesday, O-State improved to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in league play.
``At times, you could see that she did not have full mobility of her left arm but she managed because that is what good players do,’’ McGraw said of Weir.
