MILFORD_The pressure finally got to Ft. Plain Saturday night.
The Cooperstown boys basketball team rode a stifling full court press and second half offensive fireworks from seniors Chris Gentile and Jason Conklin to claim a 58-49 victory over Ft. Plain in the championship game of Milford’s Anton Remy Tournament.
Gentile came off the bench to hit four three-point shots, including three clutch shots in the second half, to win tournament Most Valuable Player honors.
The Redskins, 2-0, led by just two points after a foul-filled first half, but Conklin (15 points) led a 7-2 surge to start the second half with five quick points.
After the Hilltoppers cut the lead to 34-31, Gentile hit a long three-pointer to push the lead back to six.
``People might wonder why Chris was the MVP, and it was because every shot that he hit was big,’’ said CCS head coach Dave Bertram. ``When he gets hot, he starts putting them up from anywhere. I thought our pressure really got to them in the second half.’’
Bertram added that while he was happy to get the pair of victories, he’s still looking for more consistency from his team.
``We’re the kind of team that is going to get scoring from different players every night, and the guys have to get used to that,’’ Bertram said. ``Conklin had 15 tonight, and just one last night (a 67-34 victory over Sharon Springs). We could have a different high scorer every night.’’ [an error occurred while processing this directive] |
