Redskins begin season Friday

The Cooperstown boys basketball team will look to bounce back from the first losing season in recent memory when they begin the 2006-07 campaign Friday night.

The Redskins went 9-12 last year, and return four starters this season, including third year player Zack Sittler, the team’s leading scorer a year ago.

``We could be really good this year, or we could be really average,’’ said CCS head coach Dave Bertram, entering his sixth season at the helm. ``We have a lot of experience and some talented players.’’

Sittler and fellow senior Jason Conklin, perhaps the team’s best ball handler, will alternate at the point guard and shooting guard positions.

``We go seven-deep and most of the players are interchangeable, which is a big benefit,’’ Bertram said. ``We’re quick too, so we’ll play that same up-tempo style.’’

Cooperstown will open the season against Sharon Springs in an opening round game of Milford’s Anton Remy Tournament Friday at 6 p.m. The host Wildcats will meet Ft. Plain in the other opening round game at 7:30 p.m.

The consolation and championship games will be held Saturday night at the same times, and a Cooperstown-Ft. Plain final could be a fan’s delight. Both teams like to pressure the ball and play an up-temp style game.

Other returning players for Cooperstown include seniors Luke Banner, Brian Segit and Chris Gentile. [an error occurred while processing this directive]
