Fisher injured at state meet
By Staff Report
A shoulder injury cut short Becky Fisher’s diving competition at the state swim meet Saturday.
Fisher, a Cooperstown senior, first noticed some soreness in her right shoulder during practice on Thursday, and sat out most of the warm-up dives on Friday at Erie Community College in Buffalo.
Fisher was able to complete her first three dives without incident, but injured her shoulder on her fourth dive. Fisher’s father, Steve, said Becky was coming out of an inward pike and her right shoulder locked for a moment and then popped free as she was positioning herself to enter the water.
``This caused her to enter the water in a turn, not facing away from the board as the dive requires,’’ Steve Fisher said. ``That dive effectively knocked Becky out of contention in the meet."
Cuts for Saturday’s championship rounds are made after the fifth dive, and even though Fisher knew she wasn’t going to qualify, she still continued to compete. On the final dive of her high school career, she performed a near perfect one and a half.
`` In Becky’s first dives, you could see that her shoulder was bothering her,’’ Steve Fisher said. ``Although she was diving well, she didn’t look sharp. The shame of the injury is that Becky was still on track to meet her personal goal of finishing in the top 16. Only the top 16 divers earn the right to complete their last three dives in the championship rounds.’’
Becky finished 28th out of 40 girls who qualified for the state meet. She hopes to continue her diving career next year at Colgate University, she said.
Steve Fisher said on Wednesday that Becky’s injury would not require surgery and she should make a full recovery.
