Milford girls advance to D final

ONEONTA_Don’t wake Lorin Campbell, he’s in the middle of a great dream.
The Milford girls soccer coach fulfilled part of his dream season with a 2-1, heart stopping overtime victory
over his Alma mater, Downsville, on Wednesday at the Wright National Soccer Campus, sending the Lady Wildcats and
Campbell to their second Section Four Class D finals appearance in school history.
Milford, 18-1-2, and
the second seed, will meet top seed Davenport on Saturday at the Wright National Soccer Campus at a time to be
determined.
``This has been my dream for a long time, and this is our season to do it,’’
Campbell said shortly after his team and fans finished a wild celebration after the final agonizing minutes had
ticked off the clock. Campbell’s team has won three straight Tri-Valley Championships and seven in his 14 years
as head coach, but have never played in a Class D final.
Fittingly, the first trip did not come easily. After
the teams were tied at 1-1 after regulation, Milford’s Emily Brigham scored what proved to be the game-winning
goal less than two minutes into the first overtime period.
The junior said she benefited from a mistake by a
Downsville defender and was left one-one one with Downsville goalie Monica Nuzzo.
``I knew it was a big goal,
and I was a little nervous so I took my time,’’ Brigham said after the game. ``I wanted to make sure I took
a good shot.’’
She did, but Milford still had over 18 minutes of game time to kill before they could
advance.[an error occurred while processing this directive] | |
