Dave Adsit presented with annual Fetterman Award

Michael Coccoma probably summed up the contributions of Cooperstown’s Dave Adsit best with the following adage: ``The superior man is modest in his speech, but succeeds in his action.’’

The soft-spoken Adsit’s actions as a longtime volunteer and sponsor of Cooperstown sports programs resulted in him being named the 2006 recipient of the Patrick C. Fetterman Award, presented by the Clark Sports Center annually to community members who go above and beyond in their commitment to youth sports.

Adsit became the 13th recipient of the award at a luncheon at the Otesaga Hotel on Friday afternoon.

``Pat Fetterman was a special man,’’ Clark Sports Center Director Brad Feik said of the longtime associate director of the gym. ``He was a devoted husband, a great father and he had a special connection with kids. Dave Adsit embodies those same characteristics. ’’

Adsit is a 1975 graduate of Cooperstown High School, where he was a basketball and baseball star. After attending pharmacy school in Albany, he took over as pharmacist for his father, William, at the Church & Scott Pharmacy on Chestnut Street, in 1980. He and wife Sue have four boys.

Since returning to Cooperstown, Adsit has served as president of both Cooperstown Youth Baseball and the Cooperstown Soccer Club and the pharmacy has donated well over $10,000 since the 1960s, Feik estimated. Adsit still coaches soccer teams, both with the Cooperstown Soccer Club and in the 7-on-7 league he started at the gym.

The Clark Foundation’s Chuck Hamilton presented Adsit with the award, and noted how all 13 recipients of the award had made a positive difference in many youngsters’ lives over the years.

During his speech, Adsit said he went to the Sports Center recently and looked at the Fetterman plaque, and was struck that all the former recipients had made a positive impact on his life in one way or another.

``You’re only as good as the people you’re working with, and I’ve been lucky to work with a lot of great volunteers here in Cooperstown,’’ Adsit said.

He pointed to a table that included Bob and Donna Snyder, Ed and Pat Hazzard and Bruce and Lorna Wilhelm as others in the community who do a great deal for area youth.

``I might steal this plaque from the gym some day and etch their names on there too,’’ he said. ``This is truly a special event, and something I’ll cherish for the rest of my life.’’

Past winners include: 1993: Lavern "Beanie" Ainslie; 1994: Jack Vineyard; 1995: Ted Kantorowski; 1996: Malcolm Brooks; 1997-98: Jerry Townsend; 1998-99: Don Howard; 2000: Dick White; 2001: Pat and Ed Hazzard; 2002: Stephen ``Sharky’’ Nagelschmidt; 2003: Frank Miosek; 2004: Ted Spencer; 2005: Terry Bliss.
