CVS Boys soccer bounces back

CHERRY VALLEY_The Cherry Valley-Springfield boys soccer team bounced back from a loss in the Tri-Valley Championship game on Saturday with a 5-0 victory over Worcester in a Section Four Class D opening round game on Tuesday.

The Patriots, 13-3-2, and the fifth seed, advance to play at fourth seed South Kortright, 14-2-2, on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

``Even though we lost to Laurens, we left the field feeling very good about the way we played,’’ said CV-S boys soccer coach Terri Adams. ``That carried over into today’s game.’’

David Adams got the Patriots on the board first with an assist from Ian Hall, and CV-S took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Jeremy Hoag scored the first of his two goals early in the second half to give the Patriots some breathing room.

``I thought after our second goal that Worcester got kind of deflated,’’ Adams said. ``We were moving the ball around well, and that led to many scoring opportunities.’’

Four different players scored for CV-S, as Jason Guernsey added a goal on a penalty kick, and Chris Anderson added a second half goal.

CV-S lost a 2-0 decision to Laurens on Saturday at the Wright National Soccer Campus, their first appearance in the T-V title game since 1991. Laurens’ Miguel Short scored a first half goal on a low shot that skipped under the arms of Patriots goalkeeper Mathias Vanderwerker.

While the undefeated Leopards completely dominated the first half, CV-S went on the offensive in the first 25 minutes of the second half.

``I thought we dominated play in the second half, we just couldn’t get the ball in the net,’’ said CV-S boys soccer coach Terri Adams.

The Patriots’ best scoring opportunity came off a direct kick by junior Jason Guernsey, who lofted a shot to the upper corner of the goal. But Laurens’ 6’3’’ goalie Aaron Laing got a fingertip on the ball and tipped it over the crossbar.

``It might have been a different game if that had gone in,’’ Adams said.

Laurens sealed the win a few minutes later when Jesse Campbell converted a penalty kick.

Laurens, the third seed in Section Four Class D, also beat the Patriots during the regular season, 3-1.

Adams said South Kortright, which won a Class D title a year ago, and beat previously undefeated Davenport Saturday, will pose a big challenge for her team.

``I know they’ve got some quick forwards and are a good team,’’ she said. ``We’ve got some work to do toi beat them, but we’re looking forward to it.’’€©
