Made believers out of Edmeston

The Milford girls made believers out of Edmeston for the third straight season Saturday, and will now begin the
quest for their first ever Section Four Class D crown.
The Lady Wildcats, 15-1-2, won their third straight
Tri-Valley Championship with a 2-0 victory over Edmeston Saturday at the Wright National Soccer Campus, and hosted
Tri-Valley rival Worcester Wednesday in a first round sectional contest.
Milford has adopted the Yolanda
Adams song ``I Believe’’ as its theme for the season, and anyone watching Saturday’s game would
have to believe in the talent of the Lady Wildcats.
``I couldn’t have asked for anything
more,’’ said Milford head coach Lorin Campbell.
Senior defender Corrine Ketzlick got Milford on
the board first, converting a direct kick from about 25 yards out with 15:49 remaining in the first half.
The
shot just snuck under the crossbar and was out of the reach of Edmeston goalie Suellyn Tophoven.
``We’ve
worked a lot on that shot, and she’s learned to soften up,’’ Campbell said of Ketzlick’s goal.
``It was perfectly placed.’’
Milford continued their offensive onslaught over the next few minutes,
and Brenna Campbell gave her team a two goal advantage when she slipped by two defenders and slammed a shot at the
charging Tophoven.
The shot bounced off of Tophoven’s body, bounced
again and rolled into the goal. It was Campbell’s team-leading 30th goal of the season.
``We had a lot of
other scoring opportunities and we really didn’t let Edmeston threaten to score,’’ Campbell said. ``If
we keep playing with this intensity we’ll be tough to beat in sectionals.’’
Defensively, Campbell
credited Natasha Roseboom with helping to shut down Edmeston’s leading scorer, Amanda Doxtader.
Assuming
Milford, the third seed, is able to defeat Worcester, and sixth seed South Kortright defeats Margaretville, it would
set up a rematch on Saturday of last year’s semifinal game, won by the Rams.
``Everything is kind of working
out the way I hoped it would,’’ Campbell said. ``We’d love to meet South Kortright again and have that
revenge factor working in our favor. The girls have wanted a shot at them since losing to them last year,
and hopefully we’ll get that chance.’’
