Every time the Cooperstown football team seemed to gain some momentum against Adirondack Friday night in their Homecoming Game, something seemed to go wrong. When it was over, Adirondack had a 35-7 victory, eliminating the Redskins from postseason play. Cooperstown, 3-3, will travel to Sauquoit on Saturday for their regular season finale.

After Adirondack took a 7-0 lead after one quarter, the Redskins’ next drive was stalled by a penalty, and the Wildcats scored again on a 5 play, 50-yard drive to take a 14-0 lead into halftime in front of a big Homecoming crowd.

But the Redskins got the ball first in the third quarter, and with quarterback Frank Petroskey and running back Lucas Niedzialkowski running for big gains, drove to Adirondack’s five-yard line. Junior Tyler Combs ran in from there to cut the lead in half, 14-7, and seemingly give the momentum back to Cooperstown.

The play of the game happened on Adirondack’s next series, when they faced a fourth and 4 on their own 44-yard line. Wildcats’ head coach Pat Fiorenza decided to go for it, and running back Travis Lemon not only picked up the first down, but broke through the middle and ran all the way to Cooperstown’s two-yard line for a 54-yard gain before being dragged won from behind by Petroskey.

Adirondack scored one play later to go up, 21-7, and Petroskey was intercepted by Adirondack’s Desmond Williams on the final play of the third quarter, setting up another Adirondack score.

``When you’re outgunned, you’re outgunned, ’’ said CCS football coach Steve Pugliese. ``I thought we played hard and showed a lot of character, but they had too many weapons for us.’’

Senior Lucas Niedzialkowski, in his third game at running back, led the team in rushing, while Petroskey again led the team in tackles.

Cooperstown’s game at Sauquoit will be played in Waterville beginning at 4 p.m. as Sauquoit’s football field is unplayable. Pugliese said his team will play two additional games, possibly in a tournament, over the last two weekends in October.

``We’re pretty evenly matched with Sauquoit, and now we want to finish the season with a winning record,’’ Pugliese said.

Note: Before the game, senior cheerleaders and football players were recognized along with their parents. Senior cheerleaders are Kelsey Bachana, Catherine Pashley and Landry Rubino. Senior football players include Petroskey, Niedzialkowski, Kyle Bronson, Sam Chapman, Eric Coe, Todd Collier, Steve Guaneri, Brian Segit, Josh White and Tim Schorer. Guaneri was also the Homecoming King this year. ۩
