Coop football crushed by Herkimer, 35-0

Two of the best girls soccer teams in the state, who also happen to be just 10 miles apart, will meet on Saturday for local bragging rights. Milford, 13-0-1, and ranked fourth in the latest Class D state poll, will host Cooperstown, the defending Section Three Class C champion who are 8-3 overall and ranked 12th in Class C, at 11 a.m. on Saturday. The Cooperstown girls soccer team is fresh off a state Final Four appearance a year ago and is undefeated in league play. The Milford girls are having a dream season, outscoring their opponents by a 58-6 margin in their 14 games and will be shooting for a third straight Tri-Valley Championship later this month. The Lady Wildcats clinched the Tri-Valley east with a 1-0 victory at Worcester Monday night, as junior Brenna Campbell scored her 28th goal of the season to provide the winning margin. ``She got the ball around the 18, made a move and just fired a shot,'' said Brenna's father and coach, Lorin Campbell. ``We practiced that all summer because we knew teams would pack in their defense against us.'' While Brenna Campbell is averaging exactly two goals a game, teammate and fellow junior Maria Arnot has added 16 goals and 12 assists. Although Milford and Cooperstown are separated by just 10 miles, the sports teams rarely play one another as Milford is a D school and Cooperstown a C school. But as luck would have it, the teams will meet Saturday in a highly anticipated match. The game will be an especially good litmus test for Milford, the smaller school. The Lady Wildcats have won two straight T-V titles, but have yet to win a Section Four Class D title under head coach Lorin Campbell. A victory over a Class C power would certainly give them reason for optimism when sectionals begin. ``I don't shy away from good competition and I love the fact we're playing Cooperstown,'' Lorin Campbell said. ``Our girls know each other because they play against one another in the summer league. We've clinched our side of the league and now we need to keep winning and get the top seed for sectionals.'' ``We're excited to play Milford,'' said CCS girls soccer coach Jennifer Pindar. ``They have a good team and have had a successful season. I believe that all the local schools are rivals when we play each other. It will be a tough game and I think we're ready for it.'' While Milford has two of the highest scoring players in the area in Campbell and Arnot, Cooperstown junior Anna Kieler has been averaging about a goal a game with 11 goals and 2 assists in 12 contests.
