Redskins lose first of year

HAMILTON_The Cooperstown boys cross country could not have asked for a better start to the season last Wednesday.

A first place performance from senior Stephen Scrafford and a sweep of a six-team meet on the challenging hills of the Colgate University 5K course left head coach Jessie Ravage with just one question.

``We looked so good, I’m kind of afraid of where do we go from here,’’ Ravage said with a laugh.

Included among the five teams Cooperstown defeated Wednesday was Center State powerhouse Sauquoit, whom the Redskins defeated for the first time in Ravage’s 13-year coaching career.

``That was a very big deal to us,’’ Ravage said. ``If we didn’t already have a big bulls-eye on our chests, we will now.’’

CCS was already a marked team considering they are the defending Class D state champions.

``With a dual meet score of 21-34 over Sauquoit, it was a clear victory,’’ Ravage said. ``The course at Colgate is one of the toughest in Division One, so for us to run as well as we did was very impressive.’’

Other dual meet team scores were Cooperstown 15, Westmoreland 50; Cooperstown 18, New York Mills 45; Cooperstown 27, Sherburne-Earlville 44; and Cooperstown 15, Hamilton 50 (like golf, low score wins in XC). Senior tri-captain, Stephen Scrafford, led the race by nearly a minute over the course in a time of 17:54. Brian Reis, also a senior tri-captain, followed in third in 18:58. Both six-year runners, they capitalized on a powerful combination of training and experience, Ravage said. [an error occurred while processing this directive]
