Redskins lose first of year

The Cooperstown boys soccer team held a 1-0 lead on undefeated Ilion halfway through the second half, but a couple of defensive mistakes cost them a 2-1 decision.
"It was a very physical game, and I was happy with the way we played," said Cooperstown head coach Frank Miosek, who saw his team fall to 2-1 on the season. "We play our first league game at Sherburne on Thursday, and I'm eager to see how we respond."
Luke Banner scored Cooperstown's lone goal off an assist from Chris Gentile, and Miosek said the Redskins had a tough time generating a consistent offense against the physical play of Ilion.
"We got banged around pretty good, but that's part of the game," Miosek said. "We outshot them and we had more corner kicks, but that doesn't always translate to a victory."
Cooperstown defeated Herkimer, 4-1, at home last Wednesday, as Jason Conklin scored a pair of goals.
"Jason has been excellent at the midfield, and really overall I'm very pleased with our play," Miosek said. "We lost to Ilion 5-2 last year and they are one of the better teams we'll face."
Next Thursday, Sept. 21, the Redskins will host Mt. Markham, who Miosek has often referred to as his team's biggest league rival.
Girls back on winning track
After losing back-to-back games last week, the Cooperstown girls soccer team took oput some frustration at Franfort-Schuyler Monday night, winning 7-2.
Anna Kieler continued her torrid scoring pace with 2 goals and an assist; Lindsay Soraci also had 2 goals and an assist; Lisa Covert had one goal; Kelsey Brodersen scored off a corner kicked assisted by Kyle Mackie; and Mackie also scored.
"We played well against Frankfort and we working on our passing game," siad CCS girls soccer coach Jennifer Pindar. "Since last week's game against Herkimer, we have been working on passing and getting the ball through the defensive midfield and then to the forwards. We started the season with three tough games, and it's a good way to start the season because is shows us early on in the season what to work on as a team."
The Redskins are 2-2 overall, and played at Center State Conference rival Sauquoit on Wednesday.
"We are looking forward to our league season beginning this week," Pindar added.
