In a sometimes sloppy but entertaining season opener for both teams, the Cooperstown football team eked out a 14-12 victory over longtime rival Richfield Springs on Saturday afternoon at Lambert Field.
CCS will travel to Waterville Friday night for a 7 p.m. contest under the lights.
Redskins senior quarterback Frank Petroskey threw for one touchdown and ran for another to lead the offensive attack against Richfield, and also led the team in tackles from his free safety position on defense.
"Frank seemed like he was in on every tackle, I'm thinking of moving him to linebacker," said CCS football coach Steve Pugliese. "He played well offensively too, but he was a little jacked up and made a couple of mistakes."
The Indians took a 6-0 lead when quarterback Brad Lindsay ran 15 yards around the right end untouched for a score with just over three minutes remaining in the first half. Brian Segit blocked the extra point attempt, in what later proved to be a very big play.
Petroskey returned the ensuing kickoff to Cooperstown's 45-yard line, then ran four times to the Richfield 25-yard line with 30 seconds remaining.
After Cooperstown used its final time-out, Petroskey lofted three passes for the 6'4" Segit into the corner of the end zone which fell incomplete. On fourth down, with 4.6 seconds remaining, Petroskey found Kyle Bronson all alone in the end zone to tie the score on the final play of the half. Segit's extra point gave Cooperstown a 7-6 halftime lead.
Cooperstown's opening drive of the second half was slowed by a holding penalty, and neither team was able to score in the period. One of the big plays of the game occurred on Cooperstown's opening drive of the second half, when Pugliese decided to go for a first down on 4th and one on Cooperstown's 40-yard line.
Petroskey, who finished with a game-high 114 yards rushing on 19 carries, picked up the first down, and later in the drive scored what proved to be the winning score on a nine-yard run.
"We were dominating them defensively, so I thought it was worth the gamble," Pugliese said.
On Richfield's next possession, they faced a 4th and 10 on their own 40, and after using their final time-out, Lindsay found Nick Sovocool open on a crossing pattern and the junior raced down the sideline untouched for a touchdown.
On Richfield's two-point conversion attempt, junior Josh White hit Lindsay low, and Petroskey and Segit piled on to keep him just short of the goal line.
As Cooperstown attempted to run out the clock, Petroskey fumbled on a run up the middle and Richfield recovered. The Indians, without a time-out, drove to Cooperstown's 30, but with 11 seconds remaining on the clock chose to run up the middle for a short gain as time expired.
"A win is a win," Pugliese said. "We cannot have the turnovers (3 fumbles, one interception) we had today and win games. But this is a team that should get better each week, and if we do that we can compete with almost anyone."
After playing Waterville Friday in another non-league game, the Redskins will begin Center State Conference play on Friday, Sept. 15 at Herkimer.
Note: Pugliese said he was impressed with the play of linemen Todd Collier and freshman Kyle Liner on both sides of the ball...Cooperstown held Richfield to less than 60 yards rushing on the day.
