C-town All Stars defeat Sidney to win tournament
The Cooperstown Major League All-Stars won both preliminary games and then clinched the rain-postponed championship game against Sidney Moose Lodge 277 on Sunday, to win the Cooperstown Little League Tournament in decisive fashion.
Cooperstown began their winning streak by beating Catskill Mountain on Monday evening, 7 to 4. Pitchers Molly Pearlman, Ryon Bennett and Jeff Flynn combined for 9 strike outs to hold the visitors off base, and the offensive attack was highlighted by a home run and a triple by Jarrett Hotaling, a double and triple by David Bonderoff, a double by Jeremiah Ford and singles by Harrison Clinton, Jim Donley and Benny Bauer.
Wednesday's game against Walton was rained out and played on Saturday morning. Under an overcast sky, Cooperstown's Clinton, Hotaling, Bauer Bowen and Pearlman contributed singles while the team received 8 bases on balls. Aggressive base-running combined with several errors on Walton's side, led to 14 Cooperstown runs while Harrison Clinton and Ethan Bliss pitched a combined 2-hitter to hold Walton to 5. Molly Pearlman and Jeff Flynn put together two 6-6-3 double plays to record the defensive highlights of the game.
Saturday's weather was no kinder than Wednesday's for the home team, postponing the championship game to 11 a.m. on Sunday. Playing as the visiting team, Cooperstown went quietly in the top of the first while Sidney used 2 walks, a single and several miscues by Cooperstown to tally twice in the bottom of the frame. Cooperstown tied the score in the second a single by Donley, a walk to Bliss, a double by Bowen and a single by Flynn. Hotaling then struck out the first 2 and ended the inning on a pop fly to right field to end the inning. In the third, Cooperstown scored 4 runs on singles by Pearlman and Hotaling, a well-placed bunt by Bliss and RBI's by Clinton and Bowen. Sidney would add 3 runs in their half of the inning on 3 singles before Hotaling struck out the last batter. Clinton came in to shut out Sidney in the last 3 innings with the help of excellent defense by first-baseman Jeff Flynn, center-fielder Kevin Huggins, and the strong backstop of Jarrett Hotaling.
The squad brought the trophy back home after losing in the championship game last year. Sidney finished second, Oneonta finished third, Catskill Mt., fourth, Sherburne, fifth, and Walton sixth.
In other CYB Major-League All-Star news, Jarrett Hotaling's two homers highlighted a slugfest when the locals hosted team from Duxbury, Mass., on Thursday. Coached by Cooperstown native Tom Guilfoile, the Duxbury squad got past the All-Stars by a 15 to 11 margin. Cooperstown allowed 9 runs in an error-plagued 4th inning, which saw 3 hits and 3 free passes. The home team's offense was aided by singles from Benny Bauer (2), Molly Pearlman, David Bonderoff, Jeremiah Ford, Jeff Flynn and Ethan Bliss. But the power, and 5 RBI's, came from Jarrett Hotaling's 2 bombshells in the first and second innings, the former landing against the backstop on the high school field.
