SHERBURNE-The powerhouse Cooperstown boys track team won 11 of 18 events and amassed 171 points to romp to their fifth straight Center State Conference league title Friday at Sherburne-Earlville High School.
Senior superstar Josh Edmonds set a meet record and broke his own school record with a winning time of 4:23.6 in the 1,600 meters, and won the 3,200 with a time of 9:36.4, more than 30 seconds faster than the second place finisher. The five straight league titles for the CCS boys is also a school record.
"There was nothing cheap about any of the wins, we earned everything we got," said longtime Cooperstown boys track coach Don Howard. "You just can't ask for a better team performance than we had."
Chris Goodspeed, whom Howard has aptly nicknamed Goody, was also a triple winner for the Redskins, winning the 400 meters (51.3) the 400 hurdles (59.4) and pole vault (12-6).
Howard said he was particularly happy for senior Carney Harper, who won the shot put on the final throw of the day with a distance of 43 feet, which gave him the win by about one inch.
"Carney hasn't won anything at a big meet, and for him to win at an event like this, on the last throw, was something special," Howard said. "That was one of the highlights for me."
Another highlight was Cooperstown's performance in the 800 meter run. Brian Reis won the race with a time of 2:01.9, while Stephen Scrafford finished second and Chris Leon fourth.
"That's a pretty impressive performance and shows you our quality of distance runners," Howard said.
Edmonds, Leon, Reis and Kris Reynolds also teamed to win the 3,200 relay (8:31.9), while Reis, Chris Bush, Will Tirrell and Derek Busse won the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:39.6. Cooperstown's other winner was senior Mike Tandle, who cleared 5-10 in the high jump.
CCS's 11th win came in the sprint medley relay, a non-scoring event that still managed to be an anticipated event, Howard said.
"Everyone was excited about it, and it's run by four kids who only come to the meet for that event," Howard said.
Richard Clancy ran the 400, Mike Dauchy the 200, Rajiv Patel the 800 and Ryan Jackson the 100 in a combined winning time of 4:14.6.
The Redskins will head to Morrisville-Eaton on Saturday at 11 a.m. in search of the school's first ever Section Three Class C-1 title.
"I'm not real sure of what the competition will be like, but we've obviously got a good group and it's going to take something special to beat us," Howard said. "But we've got to keep performing, you can't take anything for granted."
CCS girls track takes second
Junior Marissa Kaplan, slowed all year by a lingering illness, recovered just in time to win both the 100 and 200 meter races at the Center State Conference Championship meet at Sherburne Friday, helping the Lady Redskins to a second place finish overall.
Cooperstown also finished 1-2-3 in the 100 hurdles, with Becky Fisher winning in a time of 16.6. Rachael Kuch and Anna Weber finished in a virtual tie for second at 17.7, but Kuch was awarded second place.
Fisher also took second in the 400 hurdles (69.8) and ran the opening legs of the second place 400 and 1,600 meter relay teams. Kaplan ran the anchor legs of both of those relays, and the team of Chloe Strange, Dana Leonard, Chelsea Conger and Lindsay Valentine took second in the 3,200 relay.
Julie Barown finished second in both the long jump (14-3) and triple jump (32 feet) and Jessie Walrath took third in the shot put (31-51/2).
CCS will run in the Section Three Class C-1 race today (Thursday) at Little Falls.
