17th C-town Invitational to feature quality field

The Cooperstown boys track team needs to learn a lesson about what it means to be a good host.

In 10 of the 16 years the Cooperstown Invitational has been held, the Redskins have won their own event, including the last three years in a row. Based on what happened at the Sherburne Invitational on Friday, you can pretty much pencil in 11 of 17 and four straight.

With a big boost from newcomer and superstar Josh Edmonds, the Redskins easily won the Sherburne Invitational for the second straight year on Friday, finishing with 149 points, 63 better than second place Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton.

"I was overwhelmed with our overall performance," Cooperstown boys track coach Don Howard said. "We finished 1-2 in the 1,600, 3,200 and pole vault, and all of the efforts were very good. We weren't just winning, we were winning with very good performances."

None better than Edmonds, a senior who set the meet and school record in the 3,200-meter run, finishing in 9:36.4, and also winning the 1,600 in 4:31.6.

Now, they will turn their attention to the C-town Invitational on Saturday, one of the highlights of the regular season schedule.

Thirteen area boys and girls teams will head to Cooperstown for the meet, which begins at 2 p.m. The field will include area track powers Sidney, Oneonta and Cobleskill-Richmondville, as well as many teams from the Tri-Valley.

"You'd have to look at us as the favorites again," Howard said. "This is one of those years where I'm just going to worry about us doing what we need to do, and we should be successful. I'm not looking too much at match-ups with other schools because we're pretty deep and can score points in a lot of events."

Senior Chris Goodspeed won both the 110 hurdles (16.0) and 400 hurdles (59.0), and ran the anchor leg of the 4x100 relay which finished second on Friday.

Mike Tandle (high jump, 5 feet, 8 inches); Kyle Bronson (discus, 123-5); and Josh White (pole vault, 12-0) were all winners for Cooperstown as well, and Stephen Scrafford finished second in both the 1,600 and 3,200, in 10:09 and 4:33, respectively.

"He was right on Edmonds' tail," Howard said.

White was named the field performer of the meet at Sherburne, and his 12 feet in the pole vault was a personal best.

"I just hope we haven't peaked," Howard said half-jokingly. "Our primary goal is to win the league and we have a chance to win a Class C sectional title for the first time in school history too."

CCS girls aim for third place

The Cooperstown girls track team placed fourth at Sherburne on Friday, and head coach Connie Herzig said her team's goal for the Cooperstown Invitational is to finish third.

"We'll have to beat Sidney to get third, which is an unusual happening for us, but I think we can do it," Herzig said.

Sidney is led by superstar Katelyn Gurriere, whom Herzig described as the premier athlete of the meet.

"She's an automatic 40 points," Herzig said of Gurriere, a state champion hurdler last year who will run Division One track at James Madison next year. "She'll compete in the 100 hurdles, 4x100 relay and triple jump. She's very good, and we'll have to find a way to make up those points."

Cooperstown has a very good hurdler of its own in Becky Fisher, who won both the 100 (16.2) and 400 (1:11.7) hurdles at Sherburne Friday.

"Becky is having a superb season," Herzig said. "She was seeded fourth in the 400 hurdles Friday, but still won the event."

Herzig said other key performers for Saturday will include Julie Barown in the long and triple jump, and sophomore Laura Resnick, who placed third in both the triple jump and 1,500, and fourth in the 800 on Friday.

"Laura is having a breakout season for us," Herzig said. "We'll need a big meet from her as well."

Freshman Anna Weber took a full second off of her previous best time in the two legs of the 100 hurdles Friday, dropping from 18.4 to 17.4.

"I've never had anyone do that before at that level," Herzig said. "It was really phenomenal. She also scored in the 200 and 4x100 relay, and is really turning into a freshman phenom."

Herzig said Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton, who won the Sherburne Invitational, is the favorite for the Cooperstown Invitational as well, followed by Cobleskill-Richmondville and Sidney and Cooperstown.

"It should be a very entertaining meet, with some very good athletes competing," Herzig said.
