Gentile to get first big test of season

By ERIC AHLQVIST

Cooperstown tennis player Chris Gentile has not been challenged much on the court this season.

That figures to change on Friday.

Gentile, a junior, has not lost a singles match since his freshman season, and it's usually newsworthy if he drops a single game during most of his matches. But on Friday, the Redskins will host Westmoreland and child prodigy Josh Tayefeh.

Tayefeh helped Westmoreland to its first Section III title ever last year, winning the first singles title as a seventh grader.

"Josh has grown up playing the game, and he's got great instincts," said Westmoreland tennis coach Rich Hochberg. "He has a lot of abilities that you can't teach."

Gentile has very strong credentials of his own, teaming with fellow junior Quinn Snyder to win a sectional doubles title last spring. Neither Gentile or Tayefeh has lost a single set this season.

"This match has really been hyped, and I'm looking forward to it," said CCS tennis coach Dave Bertram, who has led the team to a 61-2 record over the past four plus seasons. "I would think at this point Chris is a better player, and I think he'll be up to the challenge."

"Neither one of them get that many good matches during the season, so win or lose this will be good for Josh," Hochberg said. "Gentile is stronger and more experienced, so you'd have to give the edge to him."

This is the first year Cooperstown and Westmoreland have met during the regular season in quite some time, so Hochberg has never seen Gentile play.

"We're in the West and they're in the East, and we never used to play, but this year we play every team in the Center State Conference one time," Hochberg said. "We both have very good teams and I think all the matches should be very good."
