Locals complete Boston Marathon

Staff Report

Three local runners completed the 110th running of the Boston Marathon on Monday.

Amy Crain, a Cherry Valley-Springfield graduate currently living in Cooperstown, completed the 26-miles in three hours, one minute and 40 seconds. Crain was a standout runner on the CV-S track team in high school, and was selected to carry the Olympic torch in 1996. Crain finished 1,246th overall among the more than 22,000 who began the race.

Two Richfield Springs residents, John Sovocool and Bill Kosina, also were among the finishers.

Sovocool, 50, completed his sixth Boston Marathon in a time of 3:07.38, good for 1,850th overall and 1,757th among male competitors.

"The weather conditions were perfect, and Boston is still the greatest race in the world," Sovocool said. "Being a veteran of the race, I love talking to first time runners and meeting different people there."

Sovocool said he was particularly inspired by the father/son team of Dick and Rick White. Dick White, 68, competed in his 25th Boston Marathon on Monday, and pushed his 40-year-old son Rick, a quadriplegic suffering from multiple sclerosis, in a wheelchair for the entire 26 miles.

"I only passed him in the final half mile, so he must have finished in around three hours and 10 minutes," Sovocool said. "That's pretty phenomenal."

Kosina, 46, finished with a time of 3:39.10, good for 8,442nd overall and 6,537th among men. It was Kosina's third marathon, and first Boston Marathon.

Two Kenyans, Robert Cheruiyot and Rita Jeptoo, were the male and female winners. Cheruiyot set a course record of 2 hours, 7 minutes and 14 seconds.

The United State placed five men in the top ten, including three through five. Cheruiyot and Jeptoo each won a $100,000 first prize.
