Milford, CV-S boys win track and field openers

The Milford boys track team began the season with impressive blowout victories over Worcester-Schenevus Thursday and Davenport-South Kortright on Monday.

Junior Ron Alston, a first year track performer, won three events (800, 1,600, 3,200) for the Wildcats, and fellow junior Dan Baxter set a Milford track record in the triple jump with a winning distance of 38 feet six inches on Monday. On Thursday, Baxter won the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.22.

"That was impressive for the first meet of the season," said Milford head coach Dave Prouty. "Our depth has been the key in the first two meets, and we've had some young athletes step up and start filling some holes."

Senior captain Kyle Hogan won two events in both meets, including what Prouty described as super times of 50.54 in the 800 and a 25.28 in the 200.

Another senior, Tucker Aborn, won both the shot and discus events against Schenevus-Worcester, and Prouty said Richie Bliss has been making important team contributions as well. On Monday, Aborn threw over 100 feet for the first time in winning the discus (10-3-7).

The Milford girls defeated Schenevus-Worcester, 79-51, as Morgan Dutcher was in four winning events, including the 200 and three relays.

On Monday in a 87.5 to 38.5 loss to Davenport-South Kortright, Milford sophomore Brenna Campbell won the 400 and 800.

"Brenna's time of 2:45.6 in the 800 was a great early season statement," Prouty said. "With the girls team we're still developing and trying girls in different events."

Prouty's daughter, Chandler, just an eighth grader, threw over 70 feet in the discus in her first time in the event.

Milford hosted Morris Wednesday, and then are off until after spring break.

CV-S teams win

Koh Chiba and Jason Guernsey each won two events to lift the Cherry Valley-Springfield track team to a convincing 95-35 victory over Schenevus-Worcester on Tuesday.

Chiba won the discus and shot put, while Guernsey won the 800 and 1,600 meter events.

On the girls side, Kim Daley won the 100 (14.3) and 200 (30.1) and Ashley VanBrink the discus and shot put to lead the girls to a 77-53 victory over Schenevus-Worcester.

VanBrink threw just under 100 feet (99 9-1/2 inches) which was more than 20 feet better than second place and nearly 40 feet better than third place. Her winning shot put of 33 feet, seven inches also won easily.
