Banner gets third win for red hot CCS baseball

What a bad break.

After scoring 26 runs in non-league wins over Richfield Springs and Frankfort-Schuyler Monday and Tuesday, the Cooperstown baseball team hosted a doubleheader last night, and then will be off for 10 days for spring break.

The 4-1 Redskins probably would rather keep on playing, especially with the way they've been pitching and hitting in early April.

"The break never comes at a good time but this year it's especially bad," said CCS baseball coach Frank Miosek. "Hopefully, we work out individually over the break and come back ready to play."

The Redskins will begin Center State Conference Division II play on Monday, April 24 when they host Waterville at Doubleday Field. With two make-up games thrown in there as well, CCS will play six games during the first week back.

Cooperstown also began the year 4-1 last year, but faltered after that and finished with just five wins on the season.

"I'm hoping with that year of experience we won't let that happen again," Miosek said.

Junior shortstop Frank Petroskey may have rekindled the steroid debate after blasting two home runs in Richfield Monday, including one over the 369-foot sign in left-center field and another opposite field shot over the right-center field fence during a 12-1 Cooperstown victory.

Philip Pohl and Derik Rich each had a pair of doubles, and all 16 Cooperstown players got to play.

"We've had different kids step up in each game, and we're really swinging the bats well right now," said Miosek.

On Tuesday at Frankfort-Schuyler, the Redskins broke open a close game with 10 runs over the final two innings to give junior Luke Banner his third pitching win of the season against no losses.

Robbie Orenstein and Brian Segit each had three hits, and Petroskey had two more hits, including a double and two RBIS. Banner and Peter Green also doubled.

The Redskins had six singles in a six-run sixth inning, and Miosek credited his team with good base running and solid defense over the final innings.

"We were a little sloppy early on, but we really played good baseball in the last three innings," he said.

CCS softball 2-2

After beating up on Richfield Springs on Monday, 23-2, the Cooperstown softball team lost an 8-3 decision to F-S on Tuesday. Senior Merritt Schifano, who had four hits and a home run on Monday, again led the CCS attack on Tuesday with three more hits.

"We easily could have won that game, but we had some mistakes that probably cost us," said CCS softball coach Dave Bliss. "Overall, I think we're playing well and found the right positions for everyone."

Bliss said Angela Feitzinger and Nicole Auriemma have moved to the outfield and provided stellar defense in the early going.

"They've made two or three good plays each in almost every game which has made a big difference for us," he said.

Junior Chelsea Sams pitched a complete game, walking one and striking out two, and took the loss.
