CV-S junior selected for elite tournament

Cherry Valley-Springfield junior Christina Titus will be saying Aloha to the fourth annual TourneySport USA Hawaii Soccer Classic this summer-if she can raise $4,000 by then.

Titus was nominated to play in the tournament by her soccer coach, Terri Adams, and recently learned she was selected to play in the prestigious tournament, which is reserved for high school juniors.

"Christina was nominated for her outstanding qualities as an athlete and as a scholar," Adams said. "She has displayed excellence in the classroom and out on the soccer field. Christina is one of the team's constant and consistant key factors. Her team play, leadership and sportsmanship on the field are outstanding. The ability to score, set up offense and defensively collect the ball are just a few of the attributes that Christina bring to this game. These exceptional qualities are what have awarded Christina many honors and the chance to play soccer in Hawaii."

"I'm very excited about it," Titus said. "Kyle Daley (a 2002 CV-S grad now playing soccer at Ithaca College) went there two years ago and she said it was the best experience of her life. There are college counselors there and you play against the best."

The tournament will be held at the BYU-Hawaii campus, which is located on the North Shore of Oahu. The girl's tournament will be held July 13-22, 2003.

Titus has been battling a hip injury, and at the season end athletic banquet received the Coaches Award for playing through the pain.

Titus said she would like to continue her soccer career in college, and is considering either Oneonta State or Cortland if she decides to stay in state.

Titus said she is hoping for help from family and friends to "achieve her dream."

"I am asking family and friends to contribute in any way they can toward this once in a lifetime opportunity," Titus said. "I am hoping my fund-raising efforts will turn my dream into a reality."

The summer classic will feature between seven and ten teams, depending on final registration numbers. Each team will have between 12-14 players which will guarantee ample playing time for each athlete, according to the TourneySport website.

Each team will play up to nine games, with six round robin games.

At the conclusion of the round robin section of the tournament, each team will then be reclassified into a medal round according to the record from their previous six games played.

Anyone wishing to contribute can send a check made payable to TourneySport USA to: Christina Titus, 3081 Co. Hwy. 31, Cherry Valley, N.Y. 13320.
