Milford's Weir 25 shy of 1,000 point mark

MILFORD-Fans attending the opening round tournament game between the Milford and Stamford basketball game on Friday will have a chance to see more than just two of the better girls teams in the area over the last decade, they will have an opportunity to see history made.

Milford sophomore Shannon Weir needs just 25 points to become just the third girls player in school history to join the 1,000-point club. She already has three varsity seasons under her belt and has a very legitimate shot at 2,000 points if she stays healthy.

Weir averaged just over 19 points a year last year to help the Lady Wildcats to a 16-6 overall record, which included a Tri-Valley Small title and a second straight Tri-Valley Championship victory.

"We lost those six games by a total of nine points, so we were very competitive last year," said head coach Jim Weir, about to begin his 14th season at the helm. "We're looking to have another successful season this year."

There seems little doubt they will, as besides Weir Milford also returns senior guard Brianna Staggs, who averaged 11 points-a-game last season; Rachel Baxter (9 a game); and junior guard Alicia Strong, who averaged six points a game.

Milford plays Stamford at 4 p.m. in the opening round of the Anton Remy Tournament, which will be preceded by Cooperstown and Hancock at 2 p.m. the girls consolation game will be Saturday at 2 p.m., and the girls championship to be played on Saturday at 6 p.m.

"Stamford is always athletic and always tough," Weir said. "They lost some kids to graduation but they always play us tough."

When Shannon gets her 1,000th point the game will be stopped briefly and she will be presented a basketball commemorating her achievement, Jim Weir said. Shannon will join older sister Becky Weir and Becky Beach as the only other girls players with 1,000 points. Five Milford boys players have scored 1,000 points. Shannon will also have her jersey on display in a case in the gym along with the seven other players to perform the feat.

Jim Weir said he expects Worcester to give his team a run at the T-V Small title, with Laurens, G-MU and CV-S all strong on the T-V Large side. In Section Four Class D, Weir said he expects Margaretville, Davenport, South Kortright and possibly Gilboa to be among the teams to beat.

Milford girls basketball schedule: Nov. 29 and 30: Anton Remy Tournament; Dec. 3: FRANKLIN; Dec. 6: at Morris; Dec. 13: at Schenevus; Dec. 16: at Hunter-Tannersville; Dec. 27 and 28: at Edmeston Christmas Tournament; Jan. 3: LAURENS; Jan. 6: JEFFERSON; Jan. 10: at CV-S; Jan. 15: EDMESTON; Jan. 17: at Worcester; Jan. 22: MORRIS; Jan. 24: at Franklin; Jan. 31: at G-MU; Feb. 5: SCHENEVUS; Feb. 7: WORCESTER; Feb. 15: Tri-Valley Championship Game.
