Valentine's Day By ERIC AHLQVIST Editor
The Cooperstown girls soccer team celebrated Valentine's Day a few months early on Saturday. Thanks to second half goals from sisters Alissa and Michelle Valentine, the Lady Redskins took a key Center State Conference victory over Waterville, 3-2. ``They work very well together,'' Cooperstown girls soccer coach Jennifer Pindar said of the sisters. ``They are both having great years.'' For Michelle, a sophomore, the goal was her seventh of the season, trailing only senior Stephanie Smith's team-high nine goals. Alissa, also a senior, is the third leading scorer for the Redskins, who improved to 4-1-1 overall with the win. ``Waterville is a tough team and this game marked the first time all season our defense has been seriously challenged,'' Pindar said. ``They put a lot of pressure on us, but we played well offensively too, we just got a little unlucky in the first half.'' Three Cooperstown shots hit the crossbar in the first half and were saved by the Waterville goalkeeper. But she went down with an injury in the second half with Waterville leading 2-1, and Alissa tied the score a few minutes later off an assist from Smith. With just two minutes remaining in regulation, Michelle scored the game-winning goal, working her way past Waterville's sweeper to set up her winning shot. Smith scored Cooperstown's first goal early in the first half, giving the Redskins a 1-0 lead. ``I'm very happy with the way we're playing right now,'' Pindar said. ``We're passing the ball well and getting solid play from both our starters and players off the bench. We're a strong team and we're just concentrating on continuing to improve.'' The Redskins hosted Westmoreland last night, and host defending Center State champion Hamilton Saturday at 11 a.m. ``Everyone keeps saying Hamilton isn't as strong as in year's past, but they have a good program and we know that will be a tough game,'' Pindar said. ``We play Sauquoit and Canastota next week too so we have some big games coming up.''
