CCS football loses in final seconds to Herkimer, 14-7

By ERIC AHLQVIST

After a deflating 14-7 loss at Herkimer last Friday night, the Cooperstown football team will likely have to play their home-opener on Saturday without leading rusher Brendan Hill.

Hill, who gained 94 yards on 16 carries, separated a shoulder in the third quarter and Cooperstown head coach Steve Pugliese said he would probably rest the sophomore for Saturday's 2 p.m. game against Utica-Notre Dame.

Hill gave Cooperstown a 7-0 first quarter lead against Herkimer Friday, scoring on a six-yard run. The Redskins held that lead until late in the first half when Herkimer scored on a one yard run on 4th and 1.

"Our films show their runner never crossed the line, and that was just one of a few bad calls we had go against us," Pugliese said.

One call Pugliese pointed to was a first down run by Hill down to the Herkimer 15-yard line with Cooperstown holding a 7-0 lead.

He clearly fumbled after he hit the ground and the play was over, but the officials conferred and gave the ball to Herkimer," Pugliese said. "I hate to cry about the calls, but I feel like we got shafted."

The fumble by Hill was one of five Redskin turnovers, including a fumbled quarterback-center exchange with 40 seconds remaining in the game that led to Herkimer's winning score.

"Put it this way, Herkimer didn't beat us, we beat ourselves," Pugliese said. "You just can't make that many mistakes and hope to win a football game against a good team like Herkimer."

Herkimer improved to 2-0 with the win, while Cooperstown, which suffered its first regular season loss since the 200 season, fell to 1-1. The Redskins will host three straight games at Lambert Field, where they have yet to lose a game.

"Our division is very tough, and this loss puts us in the position of having to put together a winning streak if we want to make sectionals," Pugliese said.

Pugliese said that even without Hill, Cooperstown should still be able to dominate the line of scrimmage against U-ND Saturday. He said either Jesse Torruella or Andy Rickard may move into Hill's fullback position.
