The Cooperstown girls soccer team, fresh off a tournament championship in the Cherry Valley-Springfield Tournament, picked up their first league win of the season Tuesday, 8-0, over Morrisville in their home opener Monday.
Senior Stephanie Smith scored four goals to give her eight on the young season.
Cooperstown defeated host Cherry Valley-Springfield 4-0 in the championship of the host's tournament Saturday. In the opener, CCS beat Sharon Springs while CV-S defeated Richfield Springs.
"Cooperstown does not have a weak starting player and they substitute quality players as well," said Lady Patriot head coach Terri Adams. "The Richfield game was a physical one, and I think it was tough for us to play back-to-back games, especially against a team the caliber of Cooperstown."
CV-S began Tri-Valley play Monday with a 4-0 loss at Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton.
"We didn't play well," Adams said. "We're a young team with just three seniors, and it's going to take us a while to gel as a team. But I think we'll be able to turn it around as the season progresses."
The Lady Redskins, who lost their season opener, 1-0, to Mt. Markham, play at Sherburne-Earlville today and host Waterville Saturday at 11 a.m.
CCS boys win wild one
Cooperstown boys soccer coach Frank Miosek and his team may look back at Monday's 4-3, overtime victory over Sauquoit as a turning point to the season.
The Redskins trailed 3-0 late in the first half of the Center State Conference game before Nick Laskovski scored to kae it 3-1.
After Dan Holmes scored to make it 3-2, Laskovski added another goal to tie the score at 3-3 after regulation.
Ben Edmonds scored the game-winner in overtime, giving Cooperstown its third win of the season without a loss heading to yesterday's game at Morrisville.
Cooperstown will meet Greenville in the opening round of the Hall of Fame/Daily star Cup Saturday at 2 p.m.
