CCS boys soccer looks to regain winning ways

By ERIC AHLQVIST

After opening the season with non-league victories over Milford and Cherry Valley-Springfield, the Cooperstown boys soccer team is already a third of the way to last season's win total.

Head coach Frank Miosek's young team battled injuries and inexperience last year, ending the year at 6-10-2, but hope to bounce back and contend for the Center State Conference title this season.

Senior Nick Laskovski, who led the team in scoring as a sophomore but missed all of last year with a broken leg, returns, along with Todd Ashley, who missed most of last season with an injury as well.

Laskovksi scored three goals in a 5-0 victory over CV-S on Tuesday in Cooperstown's home-opener.

Other returning seniors include Terrence Lane, and defenders Tim Dunlap and Doug Barthold.

Juniors Dan Holmes and Reid Snyder return at the halfback positions, and Creighton Adsit and Eric Moglia also return with a year of experience under their belt. Ben Edmonds, a junior, scored a goal and added an assist in his first game, a 2-0 victory over Milford on Friday at the Wright National Soccer Campus.

Miosek also has three sophomore players with a year of experience, including Eddie Bauer, who has taken over at stopperback, goalie Jim Dangl, and David Pikarsky, who Miosek said has had a very solid start to the season.

Jake Smith, Billy Otis, Derek St. John, Evan Jaegels and Taylor Lierheimer will all see playing time as well, Miosek added.

"I think we have the defense to contend for the league title this year," said Miosek, whose teams had been a traditional league power until the past couple of seasons. "How well we go in transition from defense to offense will probably be the key to the season. The halfbacks will be key."

Miosek said the Center State Conference looks to be very competitive this season, with Hamilton and Mt. Markham the early favorites. Cooperstown will play in a tournament at the National Soccer Hall of Fame on Sept. 14 and 15, meeting Greenville in the first round.

Cooperstown boys soccer schedule: Sept. 9: at Sauquoit; Sept. 11: at Morrisville-Eaton; Sept. 13: Mt. MARKHAM; Sept. 14 and 15: Hall of Fame Tournament; Sept. 17: at Sherburne-Earlville; Sept. 23: HAMILTON; Sept. 25: at Waterville; Sept. 27: SAUQUOIT; Sept. 28:at Davenport Tournament; Oct. 1: MORRISVILLE-EATON; Oct. 3: at Mt.
