Next win will be Milford coach's 100th of career

By ERIC AHLQVIST

MILFORD-Despite last season's 6-9-2 campaign, Lorin Campbell has averaged exactly 11 wins a season during his first nine years as head coach of the Milford girls soccer team.

Meaning a victory in Friday's 12 p.m. season-opener with Oxford at the Wright National Soccer Campus would give him the 100th victory of his career.

That milestone may be the highlight of what could be a rebuilding year in Milford this season, although Campbell said Tri-Valley teams would be wise not to underestimate his young club.

"We have 10 sophomores who are going to see a lot of playing time, and we're very young and inexperienced," Campbell said. "But if they work hard and keep improving we could surprise some people this year."

Campbell does have two sophomores with two years experience under their belts already in Shannon Weir and Jenny Allen. Weir was a first team Tri-Valley All Star last season, and will anchor the Lady Wildcats' defense again this year.

Goalie Rachel Baxter returns, as does Alicia Strong and Jessie Schrull, the only senior likely to see a lot of playing time. Campbell said junior Hanna Rathbone

Campbell said the two freshmen on the team-his daughter, Logan Campbell and Kim Devlin- are also likely to see a lot of playing time.

"We're young, so we have a solid future, and the nice thing about a young team is you get a chance to teach," Campbell said. "I'd like to see us improve as the season goes on and finish strong and maybe pull some upsets."

Campbell said last year's Tri-Valley Small champions, Schenevus, should be the team to beat again this season, along with Worcester.

After Friday's non-league game with Oxford, the Lady Wildcats will begin Tri-Valley play Thursday, Sept. 5 when they host Franklin. Milford will play in the Hall of Fame Cup on Sept. 14 and 15, playing Cincinnatus in the first round on Sept. 14, with Edmeston and Worcester playing in the other first round game. The championship and consolation games will be played Sept. 15.

...The soccer fields being built at Milford High School as part of the school's building project are not yet complete, meaning both the boys and girls soccer teams will play their home games at the Wright Soccer Campus again this season.

Milford girls soccer schedule: Aug. 30: OXFORD; Sept. 5: FRANKLIN; Sept. 6: MARGARETVILLE; Sept. 9: at Morris; Sept. 14 and 15: Hall of Fame Cup; Sept. 17: at Schenevus; Sept. 20: ROXBURY; Sept. 23: LAURENS; Sept. 25: at CV-S; Sept. 27: EDMESTON; Sept. 30: WORCESTER; Oct. 2: MORRIS; Oct. 4: at Franklin; Oct. 8: G-MU; Oct. 12: at Schenevus; Oct. 15: at Worcester.
