Wilson wins sailing's Thistle District Championship title

By DREW PORTER

As hosts of the 2002 Niagara Frontier Thistle Districts, members of the Otsego Sailing Club knew that several of the best sailors in the country would travel to Cooperstown and test themselves against Otsego Lake's challenging winds. For local sailors accustomed to the fluky winds, it was a chance to compete against the best on their home waters.

To present the best possible forum, race committee chairman Ron Streek moved Saturday's starting area to the north end of the lake.

Having the full fetch of the lake, the morning's southeasterly breeze stirred up Glimmerglass to crack an occasional whitecap.

Several races were completed in these nearly ideal conditions. As the day wore on, the wind started shifting more to the southwest creating larger windshifts that shuffled the fleet. It was here that local sailors thrived in the last race of the day with Wolfe Wilde, Dave Karl and Jonas Kelly finishing third, fourth and fifth respectively.

Consistency is always the key in competition and it was hard to come by in this regatta. Even 2000 Thistle National Champion and Olympic team member Mike Ingham found himself battling through the middle of the fleet.

As testament to the level of the competition, few sailors were able to finish in the top ten every race. Those who did would take home silver on Sunday.

Two more races were sailed on Sunday morning with the final race deciding the championship. Local sailors know, as do Thistle sailors across the country, to win it all, you have to beat the Rochester contingent.

This regatta was no different as the top four all had ties to the Rochester Canoe Club.

Bill Wilson, a past runner-up at the national championships, finished tied for first with Mike Ingham but was declared the winner by virtue of the most first place finishes.

Eric Gesner, who had the series wrapped up until a 15th place finish in the last race, dropped to third place. Local sailor, Jonas Kelly of Barneveld, cracked the top five with a fifth place finish. Other Otsego Sailing Club members in the top ten included Wolfe Wilde of Oneonta in seventh and Butch Weir of Fly Creek in ninth.
