The Cooperstown I Pony League (15-year-old) team took three victories last week to improve to 7-0 on the season and clinch the A division of the Otsenango Pony League.
Cooperstown has two regular season games remaining, but will be the top seed in the playoffs beginning July 25 unless second place Brookfield beats them by more than four runs Thursday night at Doubleday Field.
"We're getting great contributions from a number of players and we've only committed three or four errors all season," said head coach Jim Knodel. "The kids are playing very good baseball."
On July 8, Cooperstown took a 6-4 victory over Oxford, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh inning to keep their undefeated season intact. Brad Kukenberger was 4-for-4 and had three runs batted in to lead the offensive attack. Rob Knodel pitched the final two innings to pick up the victory, after Ian McGillivray pitched the first five innings. McGillivray also had two hits, two RBIs and scored twice. Colin weeks added a pair of hits in the victory, while Brendan Hill had two outfield assists from rightfield.
On July 9, Cooperstown crushed Unadilla Valley, 16-1, with Eddie Bauer picking up the pitching win and Brendan Hill going 3-for-3 with a triple and two more outfield assists. Weeks, McGillivray and Brad Kukenberger drove in three runs apiece.
On July 11, Cooperstown picked up another lopsided victory, 20-0, over Sherburne II.
Rob Knodel picked up his third pitching win of the season without a loss, and Kukenberger's streak of reaching base stretched to 14 straight at bats before he struck out in the third inning. He then got hits in his next three at bats, and was 4-for-5 in the game. Weeks also had four hits, while Knodel had two doubles and drove in five runs while also pitching five scoreless innings.
Brookfield is at Cooperstown tonight at Doubleday Field, and Norwich visits on Monday for the regular season finale. Both games begin at 6 p.m.
Playoffs begin July 25, with the second round games Saturday, July 27 and the championship game Tuesday July 30.
Coach John DeGrace said the fourteen year old Pony Leaguers faced a pair of defeats.
On Thursday, Otego took top billing with an 11-10 victory after a close game crumbled in the last inning.
Paige Shaul pitched a fine game, DeGrace said, and Billy Hlavacek, Michael Tandle and Matt Gulotta gave great offensive performances.
Derek Busse drove in the tying run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Two runs were given up in the bottom of the seventh leading to a Cooperstown loss.
On Monday the team lost again, this time to Morris, after leading most of the way.
Aaron Kloshein pitched well, DeGrace said. Hlavacek and Chris Bush had good offensive games. The game was lost in the bottom of the seventh when a questionable balk call couldn't be rescinded, DeGrace said.
"I've never seen a game end like that before," DeGrace said.
