MORRIS-The Cooperstown Major League All Star team won its first tournament of the year last weekend, taking a 21-5 victory over host in the championship game Sunday.

The tournament was the first for Cooperstown this season, and they outscored their opponents 42-5 in the three games over the weekend. On Saturday, Cooperstown defeated Otego 11-0 and on Sunday morning beat Edmeston 11-0.

"I told the guys after the tournament that I was proud of the way they are working hard and that if they kept on doing that good things would happen," Cooperstown manager Bruce Pohl said. "we really have been playing good baseball."

In the first game Saturday against Otego, Zach Sittler banged out three hits, and Tim Smith, Lucas Niedzialkowski and Kurt Bergfjord all had two hits apiece. Pohl said Wes Carroll had a triple to key a four-run first inning. Sittler, Niedzialkowski and Brian Segit shared the pitching duties.

In the semifinal contest on Sunday, Cooperstown got three hits from Luke Banner, and two each from Frank Petroskey, Phil Pohl, Smith and Chris Gentile. Banner led off the third inning with a double and Cooperstown scored five runs to seal the win. Carroll and Sittler shared pitching duties.

In the championship game Sunday afternoon, Smith went 4-for-4 and Phil Pohl went 4-for-5, while Banner, Petroskey and Carroll all had three hits as Cooperstown cruised to the championship. Quinn Snyder and Chris Gentile added two hits apiece. Cooperstown scored eight runs in the fifth inning and seven more in the top of the seventh to blow the game open.

Cooperstown will have a busy weekend, beginning Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. when they host a Canadian All Star team. At 1 p.m., they will travel to play in the New Berlin Tournament, and if they win their opening round game will play again on Sunday.

On July 28 and 29, Cooperstown will host a tournament at Ainslie Field and the new fields at the Clark Sports Center.
