CCS tennis doubles the fun with pair of titles

Staff Report

The doubles teams of Finn Dusenbery and Reid Snyder and Andrew Havlik and Ravi Dalal won Section Three Class C-1 titles for the Cooperstown tennis team last week, and Dusenbery and Snyder narrowly missed a state berth as well.

The CCS tennis team traveled to SUNY Cortland last Wednesday to begin sectionals, but rain forced them to move inside to Pine Grove Indoor Courts in Camillus.

The teams were able to play through the quarterfinals, before returning again Thursday for the semifinals and finals.

In the finals, Dusenbery and Snyder defeated Pat Nugent and Chris Tooley from CBA, 6-2-6-1, while Havlik and Dalal defeated Mike Kelly and Mike Talaba from Little Falls, 6-3, 6-2.

Cooperstown missed out on the Section Three title by four points to Mt. Markham, 54-50. The teams tied for both the regular season and postseason Center State Conference championship. Matt DeCarr took fourth place in second singles and Eric Moglia fourth place in third singles for Cooperstown in the Section Three Tournament.

Dusenbery and Snyder moved on to the Interclass State Qualifiers on Saturday, May 26, and lost a heartbreaking, three set match to Manlius Pebble Hill, the final two sets decided in tiebreakers.

The pair, both freshman, won the first set 6-4, then lost the second set 6-7 (11-9), and third set 6-7 (10-8). In the third set, Cooperstown held a 4-0 lead before MPH, seeded fourth, came back.

"It was a wonderful season with a fabulous team who played hard together," said Cooperstown tennis coach Nancy Angerer.
