CCS baseball hopes to host sectional game

The Cooperstown baseball team won for the 10th time in 11 games Monday, and a win in their season finale Friday may put them in position to host a first round sectional game next week.
The Redskins will host Westmoreland, a team they already beat once this year, at Doubleday Field Friday afternoon. The sectional pairings will be announced Sunday, and head coach Frank Miosek said he is hoping for a home game.
"I'd like to think we've earned a home game, but last year we were 10-4 and had to travel to South Lewis in the first round and Hannibal in the second round," he said. "I don't know the records of all the teams, but I'm hoping to be seeded in the top four in our bracket."
The Redskins began the year 1-2, but after Monday's 11-5 win over Hamilton improved to 11-3 overall and 10-3 in league play. CCS also avenged one of its league losses by spanking Mt. Markham on Friday. The Redskins only other league losses came to undefeated Canastota, likely the top seed in the upcoming Section Three Class C Tournament. Fabius-Pompey is also undefeated in Class C.
Miosek said possible first round opponents include Mt. Markham and Sauquoit.
One of the reasons for the Redskins' success has been the pitching of sophomore Brian Dibble, who picked up his fourth win of the year on Monday, allowing nine hits and walking just one.
"Brian stays ahead of the hitters and doesn't hurt himself with a lot of walks," Cooperstown baseball coach Frank Miosek said. "He mixes a good fastball with a curve, and has been a pleasant surprise for us."
Nate Smith, one of four Redskins hitting above .400, continued his torrid hitting, smashing a first inning home run and adding two doubles, as the Redskins built a 9-0 lead after three innings. Luke Sittler and Ryan Hill each had two hits as well.
With Greg Lott, a senior and the ace of the staff, Dibble and Ryan Hill, Cooperstown has three solid pitchers to go along with four hitters batting above .400 in Smith, Brad Hill, Jake Saracino and Sittler. Lott is 5-1 and will get the start Friday against Westmoreland.
Two years ago, with junior pitchers Guerin Blask and Matt Hazzard leading the way, the CCS baseball team won its first ever Section Three title and made its first state appearance. Last year, the Redskins lost a one run game to Hannibal in the second round.
The Cooperstown softball team is 2-12 heading to Friday's finale with Westmoreland.
Head coach Dave Bliss said his team has consistently hit the ball well, and feels the program is headed in the right direction for future seasons.
The Redskins will lose only three starters to graduation.
