CCS baseball wins fifth straight game

The Cooperstown baseball team used great pitching and timely hitting to win five straight games last week, and continue a busy week at Doubleday Field against Sauquoit Friday.
The Redskins are 6-2 heading to last night's doubleheader at Westmoreland, and head coach Frank Miosek said his team is a weary one.
"We're feeling the effects of playing every day," Miosek said. "(Third baseman) Jimmy Knodel threw his arm out against Sauquoit, and we've been playing close games every day. We're pretty worn out."
Senior Greg Lott had three wins, including two in relief, and sophomore Brian Dibble picked up two, nearly notching both wins in a doubleheader sweep of Waterville Monday at Doubleday Field. Dibble pitched a five inning no-hitter in the first game, striking out six and walking just one. Ryan and Brad Hill, Jim Knodel and Ken Hotaling all had doubles in the first game for the Redskins, who scored three runs in the third inning to take the win.
Dibble threw just 52 pitches in the first game, so Miosek decided to let him continue in the second game. Dibble and Cooperstown had a 2-1 lead heading to the bottom of the fourth, when Dibble finally tired and allowed the first two runners to reach. Lott took over and walked a run in and allowed a sacrifice fly as Waterville took a 3-2 lead.
But in the top of the fifth inning, Luke Sittler started the winning rally with a one out single to centerfield. After the Waterville centerfielder made a diving catch of a Ryan Hill line drive, Nate Smith hit a two-out, two strike double to right-center to put runners on second and third.
Catcher Jake Saracino then singled to center to score Sittler and Smith with the tying and winning runs. Lott, aided by a great diving play at shortstop by Smith, pitched a scoreless bottom of the inning to pick up the win, his third of the year.
On Tuesday, the Redskins took a hard-fought win over Sauquoit, 9-6, as Smith had three more hits, Ken Hotaling had a two-run double in the fifth and Vernon Kline drove in the go-ahead run with a single. Lead-off man Sittler also had three of Cooperstown's 16 hits.
Lott relieved starter Brett Wilhelm in the fourth inning, and pitched the final four innings, allowing just one hit, to pick up the win.
Dibble picked up his first win of the year with a complete game victory over non-league foe Milford on Thursday, 4-2. In that game, Dibble struck out nine, and allowed four hits, and Nate Smith hit a double off the wall in left-center and added a two-run line drive home run over the screen in left field. Ryan Campbell pitched well in a losing effort for Milford.
Smith also had a triple during Cooperstown's 8-2 victory over Hamilton last Friday. In that game, Lott struck out 15 and Knodel had two hits.
The Cooperstown softball team picked up its first win of the season with Monday with an 11-9 win over Waterville in the first game of a doubleheader. Pam Gus picked up the pitching victory, and Alex Paul hit a two-run triple in the fourth inning. The Redskins lost the nightcap, 16-9, despite a home run and double from Amy Kane.
