Smith, Cotter win four events

Staff Report

Cooperstown's boys and girls track teams had positive starts to their respective seasons Tuesday with victories over Morrisville and Milford in Cooperstown.

For the CCS girls, sophomore Stephanie Smith had three first place finishes, and was also a member of the winning 400 relay team which also included Mia McChesney, and Suzanne and Carolyn Clarvoe. Smith also finished first in the pole vault, high jump and 400 meter race.

"Stephanie was the big story," said Cooperstown girls track coach Connie Herzig. "She had a personal best time in the high jump and is only two inches off the school record, and was in midseason form in the pole vault (8'6") even though it was the first time she had touched a pole all year."

Smith was a state qualifier in the pole vault as a freshman last year, clearing nine feet.

Ani Scalici, another sophomore, won the 800 for Cooperstown with a time of 2:49.

"The sophomore class will be asked to be the leaders of this year's team, which is sometimes hard to ask of sophomores," Herzig said. "We're a young team, and we were hurt heavily by graduation, but we have talent and we could be very competitive."

Other winners for the CCS girls Tuesday were Suzanne Clarvoe, Carolyn Clarvoe, Jess Otis, Sarah Child, Mia McChesney, and Amy Kane.

A complete preview of the Cooperstown girls track team will appear in next week's paper.

The Cooperstown boys had nine first place finishes to win their meet, including Bryan Stringer's victories in both the shot put and discus.

Milford's Ben Cotter, a state qualifier as a sophomore last year, won four events including a school record 20 feet, 11 inches to win the long jump. he also won the 100, 200 and 400 meter races.
