Richfield, CCS wrestlers place 3rd
MT. MARKHAM-Both host Richfield Springs and Cooperstown had one wrestler place third at the 12th annual Jeffrey Calkins Memorial Tournament Saturday.
The 16-team tournament was held in Mt. Markham as work on the Richfield gymnasium, part of a school building project, has yet to be completed.
Richfield's Matt Nelson placed third at 160-pounds, decisioning Kyle Wheeler of Camden in the consolation match, 12-3.
Cooperstown freshman Chris Zoeller had an outstanidng tournament, placed third in the 103-pound weight class. Zoeller won his first match of the day by pinning Ely Goldstein of Guilderland.
He then met Isaac callan of Unadilla Valley in the second match, losing 5-3 in overtime. Callan, a junior, went on to win the weight class.
"I think Chris would have made the finals with a better draw," Cooperstown wreslting coach Jim Jordan said. "Callan was a little taller and stronger, but Chris still gave him a great battle."
Zoeller went on to defeat John Manion of Mt. Markham in the next round by technical fall, and pinned Justin Raymond of Morrisville-Eaton in the wrestleback for third place.
"Most of our other wrestlers met the top seed in the first or second round and didn't get a chance to move on," said Jordan, whose 20-member team consoists largely of freshman. "The guys are basically getting mat time and experience against mostly juniors and seniors and it makes it hard. But it's still a good experience for them for down the road."
Richfield finished 11th overall, and Cooperstown 13th.
