Milford boys first loss `nightmarish'

By ERIC AHLQVIST

The Milford boys basketball team's bus got lost on the way to Schenectady Monday night, and the team arrived at the game an hour late.

Things only got worse from that point.

The previously undefeated Wildcats absorbed their first loss of the season to Schenectady-Christian Monday, a 73-72 overtime loss. Milford held a 10-point lead with about four minutes remaining but starters Patrick Kelly and Ben Cotter fouled out on two consecutive possessions, and Schenectady sent the game to overtime with a sort jumper with less than two seconds remaining.

"We went back up by three with about 18 seconds remaining in overtime, but with 5.5 second left they made a shot to pull within one," Milford basketball coach Bill Crowley said. "We couldn't get the ball in, and we fouled one of their guys with one second left and he made both shots to beat us. It was just one of those nightmarish nights."

Kelly had 20 points and 14 rebounds before fouling out, Ryan Campbell had 17 points, Andy Work 13 points and 10 rebounds and Cotter 11 points and five assists. The Wildcats played the game without senior forward Hamza Sinanaj, who suffered a concussion in a win over Worcester Friday night.

For Schenectady, Brandon Brooks scored 31 points, including 21 of his 31 in the fourth quarter and overtime.

"They were a good basketball team, but it seemed like everything just went wrong for us," Crowley said. "We play at Franklin on Friday and then we're off until Dec. 28 when we go to the Edmeston Christmas Tournament. Normally, I wouldn't like that long a break, but I think it will be good for us this year."

Milford won their first Tri-Valley game of the year over Worcester Friday, 51-41, playing without Work, who was hurt, and Sinanaj, who suffered a concussion in the first minute.

"I was just happy to get out of there with a win," Crowley said.

Milford will face Mt. Markham in the first round of the Edmeston Tournament Dec. 28, with Edmeston and Unadilla Valley meeting in the other first round game. The championship and consolation games will be played Friday, Dec. 29.
