CCS girls soccer receives top seed

The bad news is the Cooperstown girls soccer team came up just short in a bid for the Center State league title in its regular season finale last Friday. The good news is they received the top seed in the upcoming Section Three Class C-1 Tournament, including a first round bye and a home quarterfinal contest on Friday.
Cooperstown finished the regular season with a 12-3-3 record, and will host the winner of the Herkimer/General Brown winner Friday at 3 p.m.
If the Redskins win that game, they will play again Monday in the semifinals.
Although the Redskins are the top seed in the large school bracket, there are many powerful teams in the C-2 small school bracket like Tully, Mohawk, Beaver River and Westmoreland that Cooperstown will not have to face until the C finals, if they get that far.
"I was kind of surprised we got the top seed, and the great thing is this will give us a full week of practice before our first game," said Cooperstown girls soccer coach Lisa Cherubin. "The maain aspect of our game we need to work on is scoring. We've scored one goal in the last three games, and I think we need to try and bring the ball forward offensively."
If they need added incentive, the Redskins know that as long as they keep winning this year, they can keep calling themselves the defending Section Three Class C champion and co-state champion.
"We're just taking it one game at a time," Cherubin said. "We received a good draw and I hope we can take advantage of it."
Cooperstown could meet longtime sectional rival Christian Brothers Academy of Syracuse in the finals.
CBA handed Cooperstown won of its most bitter sectional defeats in 1996 in sudden death, and the Redskins returned the favor with an upset victory in 1998.
